In Harvest Moon, players can grow mushrooms in a Mushroom Shed or a Mushroom House, which must be built by Gotz. Players can then purchase mushroom seeds from Vesta or collect them from the ground in the Fall. To plant the mushrooms, players must place a piece of lumber on a pallet and put seeds on it, watering them daily. Mushrooms will regrow about four times before needing to be replanted and can grow bigger if left unharvested for a while.

What You'll Learn

Building a mushroom shed or house
To build a mushroom shed or house in Harvest Moon, you will need to ask Gotz to build one for you. The Mushroom Shed costs 35,000 to buy the materials and build. Gotz can only build one Mushroom House on your farm. If you want to relocate your mushroom farm, you will have to hire him to demolish the existing building and then hire him again to rebuild it in a new location.
Once the Mushroom Shed is built, you will have three options to grow mushrooms:
- Buy Shitake Seeds from Vesta in the evenings when her storeroom is open. These seeds cost 3000 G per bag.
- Gather Matsutake Mushrooms from the wilds in the Autumn season and convert them into seeds using the Seed Maker.
- Gather Toadstools from the wilds in the Autumn season and convert them into seeds using the Seed Maker.
To prepare the pallets for fungus growth, place a piece of wood lumber on each pallet. You will now have a surface to grow the mushrooms on. Sow the seeds or spores onto the wood lumber. Mushrooms take a very long time to grow and you must water them daily for the fungus to grow big and spongy.
After their initial growth period, mushrooms can be harvested at a small size. If you leave them alone, they will grow to medium and then large sizes. You can also level up your mushrooms by sowing several bags of spores onto the wood. Five or six bags will guarantee that you obtain the next level of crop.

Buying mushroom seeds
In Harvest Moon, you can buy mushroom seeds from Vesta. She sells Shiitake spores in her shop for 3000 G per bag. You can also buy the blueprint for Mushroom Logs from Rebecca for 800 G. Constructing a log will require five branches. After you construct your first Mushroom Log, Hana will add Shiitake Seeds and Shimeji Seeds to her store inventory the next day.
If you want to grow Trumpet Mushrooms, Coral Mushrooms, Common Mushrooms, or Poison Mushrooms, you will need to find these fungi growing wild in the Forest, Mountain, or River areas and then place the fungus into the Seed Maker machine. You can also receive mushroom spore bags by winning seasonal Crop Festivals, but you cannot receive Common Mushroom Seeds or Poison Mushroom Seeds from the festivals.
Mushrooms do not require any maintenance besides planting and harvesting, and they will regrow about four times before you have to replant them. They can be fertilized to increase Star Rank. Placing Mushroom Logs together so their spacing corners touch will trigger a bonus production combination, and you will harvest two mushrooms per harvest.

Making your own spores
In Harvest Moon, you can make your own mushroom spores by following these steps:
Firstly, you need to source the mushrooms. During the Fall season, you will find two types of wild-growing fungus: Matsutake and Toadstools. You can also purchase edible mushrooms from the store, ensuring they are fresh and healthy.
Next, you will need to prepare your equipment and create a sterile environment to reduce the risk of contamination. Wear gloves sterilized with 70% rubbing alcohol. You will also need a piece of paper or foil, which can be sterilized with the same alcohol or held over a flame. If you are using paper, it is recommended to have both a white and black piece of paper side by side, as spores can be light or dark, and this will ensure you can see them clearly.
Now, take your mushroom and remove the stem, leaving the cap with the gills exposed. Place the mushroom gill-side down onto the paper or foil. If you wish to keep the stem attached, you can cut a hole in an index card, place it over a bowl, and insert the stem into the hole so the cap rests on the paper.
Add a drop of water onto the mushroom cap and cover it with a glass bowl or container. Leave it for 24 hours, and then remove the bowl and cap. You should now see your mushroom spores on the paper or foil!
With these spores, you can begin to grow your own mushrooms. You can inoculate a prepared substrate, such as compost or substrate blocks, with the spores. Keep conditions humid and dark to encourage the growth of your new mushrooms.
Happy farming!

Watering and harvesting
To plant mushrooms in Harvest Moon, you will first need to build a Mushroom Shed or Mushroom House. You can ask Gotz to build one for you, which will cost 35,000 gold.
Once you have your Mushroom Shed or House, you can start preparing to plant your mushrooms. You will need to place a piece of wood lumber on the pallet inside the shed/house and then put your mushroom seeds on top. You can either buy Shiitake seeds from Vesta or gather them from the wild in the Autumn/Fall season and turn them into seeds using the Seed Maker.
Now, let's get into the details of watering and harvesting your mushrooms:
Watering
After you have prepared your mushroom beds, it's time to start watering. You will need to water your mushrooms regularly, ideally daily, for them to grow big and spongy. Mushrooms take a long time to grow, so consistent watering is essential.
Harvesting
The mushrooms will take several days to grow. You will know they are ready to harvest when you see their names appear on the screen when standing next to them. You can choose to harvest the mushrooms at this point, or you can leave them to grow bigger. If you wait a few more days without harvesting, the mushrooms will grow to a medium size. Leaving them for even longer will result in large mushrooms.
The longer you wait between watering and harvesting, the bigger your mushrooms will be. However, if you are aiming for the largest size, be careful not to leave them too long, as they will eventually reach their maximum size and stop growing.
Once you have harvested your mushrooms, they will regrow at a faster rate than it took for them to mature initially. You can harvest mushrooms about four times before you need to replant. Additionally, mushrooms do not produce extra-large specimens like standard crops sometimes do. After harvesting a mushroom, it will return to its smallest size, and you will need to water and wait a few days before harvesting again.
It's important to note that Upgraded Mushrooms, which are grown by throwing multiple bags of seeds/spores onto the wood, can contribute to a "freeze glitch" that may corrupt your game data. It is recommended to only grow Level 1 mushrooms to avoid this issue.

Entering a mushroom into the seasonal Crop Festival
To enter a mushroom into the seasonal Crop Festival in Harvest Moon, there are a few steps you need to follow. Firstly, you'll need to construct a Mushroom House or Shed by requesting that Gotz build one for you. This will cost 35,000 to buy the materials. Inside the Mushroom House, you'll find wooden pallets. To prepare these pallets for mushroom growth, place a piece of wood or lumber on each one.
Now you have a surface to grow your mushrooms on, but you'll need to get hold of some mushroom spores or seeds. There are a few ways to do this. You can buy Shiitake spores or seeds from Vesta's shop for 3000 G per bag. Alternatively, you can make your own spores by finding wild-growing mushrooms in the Fall season. These will be Matsutake and Toadstool mushrooms. Place these in the Seed Maker, and then sow the spores onto the wood or lumber in your Mushroom House.
Once you've placed your seeds or spores, you'll need to water them daily. After a few days, small mushrooms will start to grow. You can harvest the mushrooms when they reach a size you're happy with. The longer you leave them, the bigger they will grow. Mushrooms will regrow about four times before you have to replant.
When you have a mushroom you're happy with, you can enter it into the seasonal Crop Festival. Mushrooms fall under the '"Other" category in the festival. It's worth noting that you can't enter a Poison Mushroom as your contest entry. Good luck!
